Shed
The shed has been treated with creosote to protect the wood, and the roofing felt contains bitumen to keep out the water. Inside are kept a number of agrochemicals and fertilisers for enhancing the quality of the lawn, flower beds and vegetable patch.

Garden Furniture
The chairs are of PVC, containing phthalates to provide the right degree of flexibility and pigments to give the colour. The table is moulded in polypropylene. To avoid the danger of broken glass in the garden, the picnic cups are of polystyrene and the long-lasting plates are of melamine.

Garden Equipment
Many different polymers come into use in garden equipment. Polypropylene is used in tools, polyethylene for bottles and containers and PVC for hosepipes. Netting is of nylon or polyester. Some tools are of stainless steel.

Gnome
The garden gnome could be of PVC and his fishing line of nylon. His pond could be staying full thanks to a polyurethane lining sheet.

Lawn and Plants
The lawn gets regular treatment with fertilisers, and the fruit and vegetables are treated with crop protection products such as insecticides. The acidity of the soil is monitored using a pH meter, and if it is alkaline, sequestering agents may be used.
