Television and Music System
Audio cassettes, in a polystyrene box, bring recorded sound by the use of magnetic tape. The video cassettes are encased in polypropylene. Compact discs are moulded in polycarbonate. The TV and music system rely on silicon chips for electronic functions.

Floor
The hard-wearing fibres in the lounge are acrylic, with synthetic dyestuffs providing the colour.

Walls
A washable wallpaper with a PVC ("vinyl") coating complements the paint on the ceiling, doors and skirting boards. Electrical sockets are of phenolic resin and a wall-mounted telephone is moulded in ABS.

Coffee Table
The coffee table has a synthetic surface of melamine polymer, with varnished wooden legs. Like the rest of the furniture, it is kept clean with the help of an aerosol spray polish.

Armchairs
The armchairs are covered with acrylic fabric and filled with polyurethane foam, made safer by impregnation with fire retardants.

Make-up
Cosmetics and make-up use a variety of materials such as talc, hydrocarbon waxes, natural and synthetic pigments, and binders and flow agents such as silicones and ethanolamines. Solvents used include alcohols, ketones and esters. The use of synthetic fragrances, often based on aldehyde and ketone molecules such as muscone, reduces the slaughtering of animals for their scents.

Lamp
Wiring for the table lamp is of copper, coated with PVC for insulation. The filament in the light bulb is of tungsten metal, surrounded by an inert gas such as argon.

Newspaper
Newspaper material comes from cellulose fibres obtained from wood-pulp, which include a proportion of recycled fibre. The paper is whitened by bleaching. The newspaper ink is specially formulated for the purpose.
